now, to me, comedy is one of the most important elements of PCN. keep in mind these are just SOME of my personal favorites, and that they only include the shows i've seen: 2006's ReCreation, 2007's Anatomy, and 2008's Awaken Movement.
10. Shout out to all my Nerds - Tuning Up, 2006
They don't always appeal to a universal audience, but i appreciate some of the more obscure references in Lenny and Lou's Tuning Up. The spontaneous Chun-Li(sa) cameo, the "ninja vanish", Powerline's hit song "Stand Out" from A Goofy Movie, and ESPECIALLY the Final Fantasy victory fanfare. Not everyone may appreciate these moments fully, but i salute them.
9. Cheetos? - Liberty, 2008
kudos to Josh Villoria as the waitor for breaking the tension with an uncalled for running gag (because comedy does NOT have to be called for). and as expected of my unofficial protegé, he stretched a minor speaking role into a solid comedic bit (for precedent, see brokeback mountain cowboy).
8. Mark Carolino in a Wolverine costume - Photographs, 2006
You can't not laugh.
7. "I built this factory, with the window to the world." - The State of Lunafornia, 2007
This line was a last minute ad-lib by Josh Mendoza as Dale, so all the credit goes to him (and to Stacey, who painted the factory backdrop with a window overlooking earth). It stole the moment and the crowd loved it. also, if you're from the bay area, "window to the world" is also a reference to the slogan of the local filipino channel. i admit i didn't realize this til later, haha.
6. Out of Breath - PCN: The Musical, 2008
After the opening song, the entire cast holds their pose and continues panting. Heavily. sometimes all physical comedy needs is one move, one gesture, and it's GOLD.
5. I might be TOO charming! - Small Price to Pay, 2007
how fitting a line. i considered just listing "Ian Emperador" on the countdown because he's awesome in both this role and as Dashing Tasyo in 2008's Lost Voices, but I chose his first role instead, and i'll tell you why. His character makes you laugh, makes you INSTANTLY care about him, and then turns around and makes you cry (or at least audibly go awwww).
4. "Cuz I'm wearing sunglasses indoors." - Dance Skit, 2006
The show-stealer of 2006's Dance Skit was definitely the Fo Shizz character, played by Jarrett Bato. Although i personally like the sunglasses line, ALL of his lines were great, thanks to both the writing and to Jarrett's voice/energy/afro. It's this role that made me consider Jarret early on for the part of Brad Gregory, the Martian in The State of Lunafornia.
3. the guys' make-up -every year.
the dilemma: without make up, it is unclear to skeptical viewers whether or not we still have faces. with make up, it is VERY clear that we are, in fact, circus whores. granted, this year it didn't seem as bad. then again, the DVD is always much worse. the joke is on us every time.
2 "I'm Hella Obvulating!!!" - Small Price to Pay, 2007
"...what the f***?!?" - me, after hearing this line the first time, 2007.
1. DON'T DO IT, JASMINE! - Modern Folktale, 2006
As part of Jasmine's father's worst nightmare, Jasmine (my little sister Stacey) cries hysterically while she stabs herself, repeatedly, including once in the head for good measure.
Easily a crowd favorite at all casts, people have said they WAITED for that moment. haven't seen the skit? well, unfortunately you'll never see this gem of physical comedy, because of what i consider the DVD producer's BIGGEST failure. They chose to stay on a camera angle in which you see NONE of Stacey's actions... negating the joke and burying it FOREVER.
well those are some of my favorites, but what about YOU guys? any moments to add to the list? any lists of your own? any ideas for future lists? this was actually kinda fun to make.
