the nerdosphere is all abuzz with giddy excitement.
and it has a lot to do with the first two films by Marvel Studios: Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. (if you haven't seen them, minimize this window, set your away message, close your laptop, and GO SEE THEM.)
these are the first two films that Marvel has produced on their own dime (with the newly formed "Marvel Studios"), instead of getting funded by another studio (like say, universal or paramount, who would in those cases get a big cut of the profit). and i think it's safe to say that these are two of the BEST superhero movies ever made. and i'm GLAD that Marvel is enjoying more of the profit, cuz i want them to make more and more films of this caliber.
here are ways in which i think Marvel Studios got it right with these two films:
1. Staying relatively true to the comics. i could talk a bit about how film adaptations are becoming less and less faithful to their source material (it was actually my thesis... not joking), but these two stayed impressively true to the tones and characters of their comics, and didn't take too many shortcuts by fudging the history and canon
2. References to other marvel films. Finally acknowledging that these heros are in the same universe.
3. the RIGHT BALANCE of tone, drama vs. comedy, action vs. substance, and accessibility for new fans vs. translating classic content for old fans.
so what's next from Marvel? Punisher: War Zone (eh...) and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (eh...). plus, i don't think Marvel Studios is producing those.

plus, they're getting really amazing talent: robert downy jr. AND ed norton?...these guys really commit when it comes to their parts, and it really shows. yay for good comic book movies =)

INDEED. Wow good call on the Marvel Studios, I did not know they have full creative control on these films. Shit, yes, no wonder...
Ironman was great because since people were distracted by the suit's majestic glory (and it was glorious) I love the fact that they didn't play down that he was a morally askew businessman. Tony Stark:Business::Downey Jr.:Alcohol. Win-win. And no better than Norton to play desperation because that's what the Hulk was all about. I watched the Ang Lee film again and I appreciate that stupid ass Eric Bana said that being the Hulk meant ultimate freedom. But Norton was all about controlling that power out of desperation. Do what you gotta do, I would totally shit out a usb key if I had to.
