I haven't seen M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening, and for all i know, it could be a great movie.
but seeing the commercials and trailers for this film kinda just pisses me off. why? because of the almost NONEXISTENT premise. they say you should be able to sell your story with one sentence, that you should be able to sum up the idea of your story briefly, in a way that makes someone want to see/read it.
but here is the ENTIRE premise, the catchy, catchy hook of the film that will reel the masses into theater seats: Something is happening.
that's it??? what the fuck man?!?! i get it, your Shyamalan, you made Sixth Sense, but come on, dude! and i understand that the POINT is that we have no idea what's going on (and therein, i suppose, lies the movie's "hook"), but it all seems so LAZY to me.
like artists who hang BLANK canvases and call it abstract. or if an author leaves the ending ambiguous (or absent) and leaves it up to the reader to decide what happened. it's all very artsy, and can be powerful if done well, but on the other hand, can come across as a lame ass cop-out.
i get the feeling that shyamalan only got this movie approved and greenlighted because he's shymalan. it's like if "The Blair Witch Project" was just called "The Blair Project," or if "Cloverfield" was just called "Some Guy's Home Video of People in Danger For Some Reason and Maybe There's a Monster but Maybe Not?" The plot is so damn vague that The Happening might as well be called "M. Night Shyamalan's Come Watch this Movie"
i'll probably see The Happening eventually, and it may be a good movie, i'll give it a chance.
but know this, mr. shyamalan: your trailers did NOT, for a moment, "hook" me.
