While giving my Martian friend, Xorg, the cliffs notes on human civilization, i came across a few topics that understandably, gave him some trouble.
Owen: It's a charity walk. You walk to raise money for a good cause.
Xorg: So people employ you to walk for them? Do you preform errands? Or perhaps carry them?
O: No, you just walk.
X: This employment seems non-beneficial.
O: They don't "employ" me, they pledge.
X: They swear allegiance to you?
O: No, "pledge" means to donate money.
X: To fund the cause?
O: Yes.
X: So you believe in a cause, and then find others who believe...
O: Yeah...
X: And they agree to donate money...
O: Right...
X: ...but ONLY pending your completion of gainless pedestrian exhibition?
O: Um... yes.
X: Shouldn't the charitable cause be enough to warrant donation?
O: ....I think it's time I told you about "guilt trips."
