you could save millions of lives...

...if you found a way to make smoking uncool.

That's it.
it's THAT simple.
and THAT hard.

"Cool" is such a frustratingly abstract thing. People are literally dying trying to chase it.

But there's no one with their finger on the button. No one really decides it. I'm sure the media and entertainment industry has some sway, but really they're just gonna go with whatever makes money.

Practically speaking, smoking makes no sense. It literally serves NO purpose. but at some point, it managed to attach itself to "coolness," and now kids can't get enough. and not even the fact that
IT
IS
POISON
can stop people from lighting up. you can tell smokers that smoking is dangerous, but they won't care, they'll still rebel.

cuz danger is cool.
and rebelling is cool.
and not caring is cool.

i'd like to think of poignant yet optimistic way to wrap this up.

i really would.

I feel passionately about this subject because it hits close to home. But in my limited experience, I'd add that there is at least one other appeal to smoking that also needs to be addressed (and then somehow eliminated): people also smoke to relieve stress. You could say that some people choose this stress-reliever because it seems like the cool thing to do, but I know that for others, they've sacrificed close relationships and broken trust by smoking not to be cool, but because that release was just so damn important.

I hate smoking of any form. RAHH!!
